Anonymity and the freedom that comes with it can be used for good, but far too often people take the approach from Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back: “That’s what the internet’s for, slandering people anonymously.” The trolls. The doxxers. Some people can’t have nice things. (The freedom of anonymity is a “nice thing.”) This isn’t new. People have been posting online since BBSs, AOL and CompuServe. Maybe people are getting bolder now, or perhaps with social media, it seems more prevalent. It’s also possible that it’s more acceptable now to slander anonymously.
